For centuries people have valued the charm, beauty and mystical properties of gemstones in jewelery. Gemstone earrings, necklaces, bracelets and other bodily adornments have been treasured for their aesthetic and mystical properties since the dawn of intelligent life. The dictionary defines gemstones as ‘precious or semiprecious stones, especially ones that are cut and polished’. What the dictionary does not tell us is just how gemstones have been valued and used throughout history and continue to be valued and used today. They are far more than pretty minerals which can be polished and set into lovely jewelery; they have inherent powers which can help all of us to cope with the demands of everyday life.

It is believed that the ancient, lost civilizations of Atlantis and Lemuria harnessed the power of these stones for communication and escape from difficult situations, whilst the Egyptians used them for healing and attributed magical properties to a vast array of stones. These beliefs continued throughout the Middle Ages when kings and knights of the realm wore particular gemstones (often bestowed on them by their superiors or loved ones) in their armor to protect them in battle.

Nowadays such stones have a uniquely personal appeal to us as they are associated with our birth dates and referred to as ‘birthstones’ and to each stone is attributed meanings and mythologies. For example the birthstone for the star sign Aquarius (the eleventh astrological sign in the zodiac relating to those born mid January to mid February) is the beautiful amethyst. This gemstone is known as the ‘elevator’ in that it is believed to be a powerful aid to spiritual enhancement by elevating the lower natures to a higher consciousness. What this means is that the amethyst guides clear thinking and is helpful in mediation, inspiration and intuition. Needless to say the amethyst is a very popular stone in jewelery, particularly rings, pendants and earrings. Wearing amethysts is believed to strengthen the endocrine and immune system as well as having beneficial effects on right brain activity.

The ruby is another highly sought-after gemstone. It is the birthstone for the zodiac sign of Leo, the fifth astrological sign of the zodiac, symbolized by fire. This beautiful blood-red stone is believed to preserve the body and enhance mental health. It is traditionally associated with affection, passion, power and majesty. Known as the ‘heart stone’ (for obvious reasons) it is believed to strengthen the mind, body and spirit by removing obstacles and reinforcing immunity by acting as a tonic to body and spirit.

The birthstone for May (the latter half of the zodiac sign of Taurus) is the sumptuous emerald. This gorgeous, deep green beryl stone signifies unconditional love and gives the wearer great power. It strengthens the vital organs (heart, liver, kidneys) and the immune system and guides its wearer towards spiritual enlightenment.

Choosing and giving gemstones requires a great deal of thought. They are far more than pretty colored stones. They contain a wealth of complex ideas, history and meaning, so choose wisely and carefully and your gift will be treasured for life.
