Peridot – The ‘Other’ Green Gemstone

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The gemstone peridot, the birthstone for August, was known to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, with examples of Egyptian jewelry made from peridot that date from the 2nd Millennium B.C.E. Tradition has it that Cleopatra was a great lover of the stone. It was used as ornamentation in medieval churches of Europe, and an example of this can still be seen in the Cathedral of Cologne. It is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color, although the shade of green can range from yellowish green to olive.

Like most gemstones, peridot had powers attributed to it by the ancients. It was once ground and taken internally for asthma. It can bring the wearer success and bring strength of body and mind. It can create calm and tranquility, bring peace of mind and spirit. Some of these were attributed to the stone because of its green color. The color green is the color of life, renewal, and health.

Much of the modern day peridot comes from mines in Pakistan and China, but there are also mines in South Africa, Australia, Mexico and other areas. In the United States peridot is mined in Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Hawaii.

How Is Peridot Pronounced?

Peridot is a very popular gemstone, but how exactly is the name pronounced? Pare-a-doh, or pare-a-dot? The word itself is thought to come from possibly two different origins. The first is the Arabic word faridat which means ‘gem’. The second is the French word peritot which means ‘unclear’. So which pronunciation is correct? The choice is up to the individual to pronounce the final ‘t’ or not.

The ancient Romans called the stone Evening Emerald because of the way it looked in artificial light. It has also been called the Poor Man’s Emerald. No matter what it is called, peridot is the ‘other’ green gemstone that has its own unique beauty and history.

Gemstone Globes – They’re a One-Of-A Kind Home Decor Item

Gemstone globes are one-of-a-kind home décor items. Whether it’s your living room or the office, one would make a unique style statement. They are a creative way of adding charm and class to what could have been an otherwise plain-looking globe.

The reasons for acquiring this home décor item varies from person to person. Some people like to use gemstone globes as a mere source of reference, their way to keep an eye on the countries around the world, but with a prettier look than normal globes. For others, they are a symbol of class and prestige, created of precious or semi-precious stones. Still others purchase them as collectible pieces of art, for display, as these pieces are artistic marvels, created out of perfectly fitting pieces of stone.

For those who would like to buy gemstone globes for their sheer love for gemstones, they can consider exploring the ones made up of different stones. Depending on your taste or let’s say your budget, you can choose to buy those made up of either semi-precious stones or the higher price ranged options made up of genuine precious stones. The types of stones generally used for making the gemstone globes are – Blue Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, Purple Quartz, Abalone Shell, Aphrizite, Banded Agate, Belioculas Onyx, Jade stones like Mongolian spotted Jade, Mongolian White Jade, Phoenix Jade, South African Jade etc, Chrysolithos, Coral, Green and Red Jasper, Meerschaum, Tigerite or Tiger’s eye and many more.

Not all gemstone globes follow the same theme. In addition to traditional looking ones made of blue gemstones for water, brown and green gemstones for land and white for the north and south poles, others are color themed, choosing sets of stones that have complementary colors to create the shapes of the countries around the world.

Additionally, if you really want something special, there are ways to custom order gemstone globes. In this case, they can be made of just the gemstones you want to see or possibly made with special features or additions to make it special, just for you.

When it comes to size, there is plenty of variety in gemstone globes. From desktop options to floor size selections, they run the gamut in size and shape. In addition to the size, they can also be constructed in a series of containers. Some will be atop simple structures, where the globe is the centerpiece of the item. Others will be encased in a beautiful wood frame or table base, and the wooden frame for the gemstone globes are as attractive as the globe.

There are many gemstone globes that serve jobs beyond being a table piece to look at and admire the countries of the world. Additionally, they are crafted into bookends, paperweights, clocks, fountain pens, wine bottle stoppers, and even jewelry. This variety in items means you can literally give someone the world as a present.

Difference Between Natural Pearls and the Cultured Pearls

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Natural pearls are those pearls which are the creation of nature. The nature cannot tolerate any others interference in the creation of these pearls or in other words these pearls are impossible to create artificially. Natural pearls are created when e parasite or any other organism invades the mollusc in the oyster. After a very long period of time a s pearl is created. Cultured Pearls on the other hand are formed in nature with the involvement of the man. The pearl farmers can create these pearls by entering an outside object in the tissue of the oyster.

The same process is applied for the creation of natural pearls. But the only difference lies in the fact for natural pearls the process starts suddenly or accidentally but for the cultured peals the process starts intentionally. Today the natural pearls have replaced the cultured pearls because of a large amount of risks are associated with the natural pearls. The cultured pearls can be distinguished from the natural pearls by imposing X ray beams. The pearls are now available for the pearl lovers at an affordable price. The credit goes to the pearl industry which is approximately hundered years old. The size, shape and color of the natural pearls completely depends upon the nature and the mollusc.

The pearl attains its various features relying upon whether the mollusc lives in fresh water, salt water and other geographic condition with its host named as oyster. The natural pearls are very rare and if they exist then most of them have no commercial value because they are irregular in shape and size. Because of this they did not meet with the customer expectations. In the past natural pearls were a symbol of luxury. It was used in jewelry items by the queens and the kings. In the present you can see the natural pearls only in Museums. Only a few Natural pearl beds exist in the world in Persian gulf because the most of the natural pearl beds have been harvested. The fresh water pearl beds are found in the United States of America. In near future the natural pearls will completely extinct.
